How to Care for Silver, Bronze & Gold-Plated Jewelry

Why Proper Care Matters

Handmade jewelry is crafted with care and meant to last a lifetime — but even the finest sterling silver, bronze, or gold-plated piece needs a little attention to stay beautiful. The good news: caring for your ZpArt jewelry is simple and takes just a few minutes.

Sterling Silver

Silver naturally tarnishes over time when exposed to air, moisture, and skin oils. This is completely normal and easy to reverse.

  • Daily wear is the best polish — the natural oils in your skin keep silver shiny. Rings and earrings worn regularly tarnish much slower than pieces stored away.
  • Clean with a soft cloth — a microfiber or silver polishing cloth removes light tarnish in seconds. Rub gently in one direction.
  • For deeper cleaning — mix a few drops of mild dish soap with warm water. Soak for 5 minutes, gently scrub with a soft toothbrush, rinse thoroughly, and pat dry.
  • Avoid chlorine, bleach, perfume, hairspray, and saltwater — these accelerate tarnishing and can damage the surface.
  • Store in an airtight bag or box — limiting air exposure slows tarnish significantly.

Oxidized (Black) Silver

Oxidized silver has an intentional dark patina that gives it a dramatic, antique look. This finish requires gentler care.

  • Do not use silver polish — it will remove the oxidized finish.
  • Clean with a damp cloth only — mild soap and water is fine, but avoid abrasive materials.
  • The patina will lighten slightly with wear — this is natural and adds character. If you want to restore it, contact us.

Bronze

Bronze develops a rich, warm patina over time — many people love this aged look, but if you prefer it bright, here's how to maintain it.

  • Clean with lemon juice and salt — mix a teaspoon of salt into the juice of half a lemon, apply with a soft cloth, rinse well, and dry immediately.
  • Or use mild soap and water — a soft toothbrush works well for textured surfaces.
  • Dry thoroughly after cleaning — moisture accelerates patina formation.
  • Embrace the patina — a natural bronze patina is not damage. It's a sign of genuine handmade metal and adds depth to the piece.

Gold-Plated Sterling Silver

Gold plating is a thin layer of gold over sterling silver. It's beautiful but requires the most careful handling of the three.

  • Avoid abrasives entirely — never use polishing cloths, baking soda, or toothpaste. They will scratch and wear through the plating.
  • Clean with a soft damp cloth only — gently wipe after wearing to remove oils and sweat.
  • Remove before swimming, showering, or exercising — water and sweat are the main enemies of gold plating.
  • Apply perfume and cosmetics before putting on jewelry — chemicals in these products wear down the plating quickly.
  • Store separately — gold-plated pieces scratch easily when stored with other jewelry.

General Tips for All Jewelry

  • Put jewelry on last when getting dressed, and take it off first.
  • Remove jewelry before sleeping, sports, cleaning, or swimming.
  • Store each piece separately to avoid scratches.
  • Bring your ZpArt piece back to us if it ever needs professional cleaning or repair — we stand behind every piece we make.
